This webinar is part of our April event series in celebration of Fair Housing Month. \n  \nAbout the presenter:\n  \n  \nShyle Ruder (she/her/hers)\nEducation & Outreach Director \nPrior to her work at FHCO\, Shyle worked in HIV/AIDS Services for 18 years with 14 of those years focused on housing services for people living with HIV/AIDS. As part of that work\, she has taught about Fair Housing rights since 2006. Shyle served on the Renters Education Alliance Committee for seven years and helped develop the Rent Well tenant education series\, an intensive 15-hour course designed to teach individuals their rights and responsibilities as renters. She holds a master’s degree in Postsecondary Adult Continuing Education from PSU.

You’ll learn about racially biased covenants in our local area as well as what to do to have them removed\, plans for the future of the Good Deeds Project\, and hear a public update to the initial findings of the Good Deeds Project in Deschutes County. The Good Deeds Project researches the databases of Central Oregon to find racially biased covenants and offer homeowners the tools to have them removed from their deeds. \nOpportunities to volunteer will be offered. Learn about your housing rights and local programs designed to help people purchase homes. There will be a student art exhibit themed “What Home Is” showcasing art from local students in Bend on display. Music will be provided by We Black Radio/ WBR (Bend\, Oregon). You’ll learn about your housing rights; the housing assistance resources available in our community and connect with local organizations and agency workers who support community members with housing needs. Free lunch will be provided to the first 70 people who register\, and all attendees will be entered into the drawing to win door prizes. \nThere will be two presentations during the event which focus on renters’ rights and resources to secure housing in our region. Spanish interpretation will be provided during the morning and lunch presentations. 20 local housing\, shelter\, utility and community health organizations and agencies will provide resource tables with an activity for attendees to learn about their services. The morning presentation will be Fair Housing 101 by the Fair Housing Council of Oregon and the lunch presentation will be All About Housing Choice Vouchers by the Housing Authority of Jackson County. We’ll also have two tables where attendees can sign up for 15-minute sessions with a housing navigator from Unete or with FHCO enforcement staff to talk about their fair housing questions. \n\n  \n  \nAbout the presenter:\n  \nJamie Gatewood (she/her/hers)\n Education & Outreach Assistant Director \nJamie’s background is in early childhood education\, teaching in the classroom and advocating for families. Jamie has also worked as a home visitor through a community health clinic\, providing support and education to parents in their homes. Most recently\, Jamie managed the programs of a small nonprofit care farm where she ran the education and garden programs\, volunteer program and assisted with grant work and data collection. In her free time\, Jamie enjoys cycling\, hiking\, and spending time with her family\, friends and mini dachshund\, Latte. Jamie is very excited to focus her advocacy and people skills towards FHCO’s mission in ending illegal housing discrimination.

This luncheon is a great way to learn more about the challenges and opportunities of Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) in your communities and network with other community leaders on jurisdictional efforts to end housing discrimination. FHCO will be joined by representatives from the Department of Land Conservation and Development to share information on funding opportunities\, program requirements\, and other details of AFFH. She studied how racial discrimination impacted the creation of the American welfare state\, as well as how veterans are treated in different countries and how they fit in with social services. Aside from her academic work\, she has a background in nonprofit work and union organizing\, both of which give her a great perspective to bring to FHCO! \nMel has always been passionate about addressing inequality in the United States and working for FHCO allows her to share this passion with the public\, educating folks on how they can address and combat institutional inequalities that exist in the United States. She firmly believes that education and knowledge are the best tools to create change. \n \n
