You’ll learn about your housing rights; the housing assistance resources available in our community and connect with local organizations and agency workers who support community members with housing needs. Free lunch will be provided to the first 70 people who register\, and all attendees will be entered into the drawing to win door prizes. \nThere will be two presentations during the event which focus on renters’ rights and resources to secure housing in our region. Spanish interpretation will be provided during the morning and lunch presentations. 20 local housing\, shelter\, utility and community health organizations and agencies will provide resource tables with an activity for attendees to learn about their services. The morning presentation will be Fair Housing 101 by the Fair Housing Council of Oregon and the lunch presentation will be All About Housing Choice Vouchers by the Housing Authority of Jackson County. We’ll also have two tables where attendees can sign up for 15-minute sessions with a housing navigator from Unete or with FHCO enforcement staff to talk about their fair housing questions. \n\n  \n  \nAbout the presenter:\n  \nJamie Gatewood (she/her/hers)\n Education & Outreach Assistant Director \nJamie’s background is in early childhood education\, teaching in the classroom and advocating for families. Jamie has also worked as a home visitor through a community health clinic\, providing support and education to parents in their homes. Most recently\, Jamie managed the programs of a small nonprofit care farm where she ran the education and garden programs\, volunteer program and assisted with grant work and data collection. In her free time\, Jamie enjoys cycling\, hiking\, and spending time with her family\, friends and mini dachshund\, Latte. Jamie is very excited to focus her advocacy and people skills towards FHCO’s mission in ending illegal housing discrimination.

This luncheon is a great way to learn more about the challenges and opportunities of Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) in your communities and network with other community leaders on jurisdictional efforts to end housing discrimination. FHCO will be joined by representatives from the Department of Land Conservation and Development to share information on funding opportunities\, program requirements\, and other details of AFFH. SUMMARY:Source of Income as a State Protected Class in Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\nOne of the most common concerns we hear both among people seeking housing and their housing advocates is that landlords don’t accept housing choice vouchers\, commonly known as Section 8 vouchers. In this half-hour seminar we will discuss what housing choice vouchers are\, how they fall under the protected class of Source of Income under Oregon Law\, and what the barriers are that people face in landlords complying with that law. Rental assistance programs\, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)\, SSI\, and SSDI will also be explored as protected under Source of Income. All are welcome to attend! \n  \nAbout the presenter:\n \nEliza Galaher\n(she/her)\nEducation & Outreach Specialist\nEliza Galaher is a resident of Columbia County and is honored to serve as an education and outreach specialist working with the North Coast region. Born and raised in Portland\, Eliza spent 26 years of her adulthood living in various parts of the country\, from New York City to New Mexico to western Massachusetts to Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, with a couple of other places tucked in between. In that time\, she worked in the worlds of publishing\, education\, and social services/caring services. \nWhile grateful for a rich and varied time away from Oregon\, she is happy to have landed back here where she now spends her free time working in her garden\, on her crafts\, and doing what she can to keep her dogs happy (while the cat sits and watches somewhat smugly).

At JC’s Resource Center\, she helped provide resources and support to unhoused adults. She firmly believes that houselessness and poverty are maintained by historical\, economic\, and social inequality\, and that housing is an urgent and basic human right for all individuals. As an intern at Just Compassion\, she worked in solidarity with houseless individuals to create short-term solutions to emergent and necessary needs. She believes that individualized service provision is imperative\, but the consistent stories she heard from individuals regarding eviction\, high-barrier housing\, and rising rent emphasized to her the need for larger\, more expansive community reform. She was drawn to FHCO because she wants to use education as a tool to empower local communities and citizens to protect their civil and basic human rights. \n  \n \nGina Rizk\n(she/her/hers)\nPortland Metro & Salem Education & Outreach Specialist \n Gina graduated from Portland State University with her Master of Education in 2020. She worked in the Portland Public School District for two years\, specifically working with schools that served traditionally marginalized students and their families. One of her primary goals while teaching was making sure all families had access to free extra-curricular enrichment\, especially arts education. After she made the difficult decision to leave her teaching post\, she knew she wanted to continue to focus her career on Social Justice and continue to serve the communities in Northeast Portland where she knew there was great need. During her time at PPS\, she saw firsthand the effects of unstable housing on students’ educational experiences and knew that advocating for fair housing would be the perfect way to continue to support those students and their families.

This presentation will assess the current state of our accessible housing crisis\, as well laying out strategies to address it through middle housing. \nSamuel Goldberg is an Education & Outreach Specialist at the Fair Housing Council of Oregon (FHCO)\, where he focuses on history and Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) trainings. He also coordinates the activities of the AFFH/Systemic Investigations Committee\, a collection of land use professionals and FHCO staff which serves as a watchdog for local planning activities\, strategizes how best to advance AFFH in state policies\, and provides technical support for jurisdictions. \nThis event is happening in conjunction with Middle Housing Week\, a statewide celebration of Oregon’s landmark reforms to dismantle exclusionary zoning.
